Remediation Acceleration Plan- A Numbers Game

Published: 16/12/2024

The Government's Remediation Acceleration Plan, announced last week, is hoping to focus minds and turbo-boost responsible parties into action via three core objectives.

Objective 1:  Fix Buildings Faster
Objective 2:  Identify All Buildings With Unsafe Cladding
Objective 3:  Support Residents

But behind the announcements, objectives, and good intentions, the scale of the challenges can be best visualised in the numbers.

72 people lost their lives in the Grenfell fire

7 ½ years since Grenfell

4834 buildings (with a storey height of 11 metres or over) identified as requiring remediation

1436 buildings where remediation complete

7000* buildings as yet unidentified that will require some form of remediation

49% of developer-funded remediation schemes are on site

2029 deadline date for all government-funded high-risk buildings to be fully remediated

2029 deadline date for all in-scope** low-rise buildings to be remediated or have a reliable forecast completion date

28 years would be the timescale for remediating buildings at the current rate

*   estimates range from 4000 to 7000
**  residential block with a storey height of 11m+
