Grenfell Inquiry: A Culture of Complacency
Published: 05/09/2024
The final report of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, released yesterday, found that a "very significant reason" why the building was clad in combustible materials was "systematic dishonesty" on the part of those who made and sold the panels and insulation products. The report also criticised the government and building industry for a "culture of complacency" that contributed to the disaster.
The inquiry found that several individuals and companies engaged in "deliberate and sustained strategies" to manipulate testing processes, misrepresent test data, and mislead the market. The report also highlighted the role of "systematic failures" in the building regulations system, which allowed the use of combustible materials on the building.
The inquiry made a number of recommendations to prevent a similar tragedy from happening again, including:
- A complete overhaul of the building regulations system
- Greater transparency and accountability in the construction industry
Shaun Harris our MD and respected expert within the façade safety industry provided his commentary:
“If there is one image that sums up the collective failings that led to Grenfell, it’s this.

This tragedy is I am afraid a reflection of just how disconnected parts of the industry were and, in some cases, still are. At the core was a lack of leadership, accountability and a total fragmentation of responsibility.
As we reflect on the Grenfell Inquiry's 58 recommendations, for all those in our industry who like me are in positions of leadership let's also consider the qualities that true leaders in our industry should possess:
Purpose, duty, and service: A commitment to making a positive impact.
Empathy: A high level of understanding and compassion for others.
Courage: The ability to make difficult decisions.
Inspiration: The power to motivate and show moral leadership.
Partnership: A willingness to collaborate for the greater good.
Grenfell remains a scar on our industry. It's time for us to collectively grasp the nettle and transform our industry into one where service, duty, and safety are paramount. Let's work together to build a future where such tragedies are truly unthinkable.”
